The Sugar Monster

Before I start to ramble about trivial - But still very addictive - subjects, I wanted to take the time to send my best wishes to Nonda Theodossakos and his family. Over the week-end I heard about what happened. - Even across the ocean someone's thinking of you... - I hope that he gets better and back on his feet soon. I will keep him in my prayers.

Well hello good morning!  I know what you're thinking: "Is she trying to make us forget that she's been gone for wayyyy too long?!" Okay, maybe I've left you on your appetite - reading appetite that is - for a longer delay that usual but I promise I have a good excuse! - Is there such a thing as a good excuse? - What matters is that I'm here now, isn't it? To be honest a couple of things have been keeping me busy the last few days... Most importantly, I'M SLEEPING NORMALLY AGAIN! That might be the reason behind my disappearance being that it was during mainly during the night that I'm particularly inspired! I guess I'll just have to make the time now as you all take the time to read me! - Thanks again -

Another thing that kept me away from you dear followers is a school project - SO interesting... How about NO! - Yet again, it was a team project! Joy to the world... Can you hear the enthusiasm in my writing? I need to drift away from what I'm saying to talk about something else for a second. So, team project. Really? Is it just me or are these so called Team projects the worst thing ever created by mankind? Seriously, don't get me wrong. I'm all for team projects in the real working world. - Oh! She's not a team player, blablabla! - N.B. I'm referring to my past and extensive experience here; Pre-Paris that is; When I actually was putting a lot of hours into my school work... Okay, so maybe I've slacked off a bit; Give me a break! I've been an honor row student since like forever! - It's simply that in school I've found them to be worthless! Yes, I said it: W-O-R-T-H-L-E-S-S! I just feel like everyone has different standards and aims for different goals. - Which is fine by me, as long as the work of each can be rewarded according to the effort. But nooooo, everyone in a team gets the same grade! So try understanding how a A+-obsessed-perfectionnist like me feels when everyone I'm stuck working with on a project aspires to get the average... Bottom line, when the monetary factor is out of the equation people become effortless. - Okay, so maybe, just maybe I'm generalizing a tiny bit, but it's still true in many situations; Trust me I know all about those! - You are not the one RE-doing a 40 or 60 pages document because your colleagues have never learned how to write properly! - And not the SMS or MSN language - Seriously, how do these people even get to College? I've never understood that...

Okay, I'm done complaining for one night. I just had to make my point. Going back to what I was saying... Yes, that famous project - that actually came out pretty good in the end! Surprisingly enough that is... - kept me busy for a couple of days so did my wonderful friend Maya that was visiting for the week-end. - On a lighter and happier note of course - I was thrilled to have her over! Oddly enough, I had a cooking craving during the time she was there... As it has become custom, here are a couple pictures of what I came up with!

A little bit of this...

Part 1 : "Sucre à la crème... batter"

A little bit of that...
Part 2: "Sucre à la crème... squares"

A lot more of those...

Part 3: "Cinnamon Buns + Sucre à la crème... both homemade"

Looking at these pictures reminded me that I need to get some out for my friend Timea... I'll be right back! Alright, so I was talking about the things that kept me busy these last few days... On a sadder note, - and happy note paradoxically - I had lots of Goodbye parties for all my close friends that have completed their Erasmus semester here in Paris and that are going back home... It was surely sad at times but all and all these last few nights have been GREAT! I've met amazing people that I hope to stay in contact with throughout my life, from near or far. So, Carina, Christine, Asmait, - even if I met you at the last second; It was truly a pleasure - Valentina, Tina, Radka, Adam and all the others, I want to thank you for making this first half incredibly memorable and especially for all those unforgettable moments spent with each and everyone of you.

On to something interesting we started talking about in one curiously amusing class I took - I'm not just talking about the teacher, but also the content itself - called: Design. To summarize, it's the first class and the teacher addresses the question of Art; What is Art? to be precise. One thing lead to another and we started to discuss the music industry and wether or not Lada Gaga is an artist.

Before we get into this, here is the first definition of Art according to the teacher's notes:
Art can be viewed as the domain of creation. The artist is necessarily creator whereas the creator is not necessarily an artist. Creation is truly human. The peculiarity is that he who creates is different from the object created.
Not very insightful, is it? Imagine how we feel when he's telling us in class...

Anyways, to go back to what I was saying... So you know I'm going to intervene on this debate right here. - if not start the whole discussion - Everyone is pretty much giving their opinion on the subject... Most of them saying that she's an artist! But what I don't get is how come everyone is so alienated by this character - The Fame Monster as she likes to call it - that she has put together for the public to see. Furthermore, how is it that people don't recognize that everything she does is thought of, calculated, premeditated to coincide with what the world expects of her and that is specifically to be against all odds, to chock and offend whomever! Oddly enough, when talking about the fact that Justin Bieber - Sorry to all Bieber fans for what I'm about to say - is a product that the Usher Factory came up with to serve his own interest - that being his awful comeback to counteract his flop with Here I Stand - they we're on my side and agreeing with me. But then, when saying the same thing - because God knows that the Music Industry is all the same - about Lady Gaga and the Akon Factory, they were extremely disagreeing... Their argument being that Bieber is going to disappear when he hits puberty whereas Lady Gaga's a revolution in the music world - comparing her to Madonna's I'm a virgin - that's not going to go unknown. Bottom line, aren't they both - Bieber and Gaga - simply staying true to the characteristics of the product they were made into by their respective Factories? Bieber to make all the little girls scream and Gaga to stir up trouble? With the definition that I suggested, wouldn't Usher and Akon be the artists? Bieber and Gaga their creations? I guess we will never have an answer to that question as we won't to the question of Art... At least not in that Design class!
That being said, we are February 2nd which means I'll be in Morocco in precisely 10 days and in Turkey in 18! That means that the next few weeks will be packed with plenty of cool posts... So I guess I'll see you soon dear ones. Always remember one very important thing: Life is too short, make the best of every second...

Before I let you off the hook, you have to check this video out.

In one word: Hilarious! - In french but easy to understand... -

Do you still want to work in advertising?! I want to work in it more than ever after this video! Life is good... Dans la Publicité!

Until next time,  ,  & Paris...

A's for Awesome

Aloha to all! ッ I know I've been MIA for the last 24+ hours! I finally understood the reason for my insomnia! - Thanks to Nana Avenue - For those of you wondering, my sleeping habits are back to normal. So, fear no more dear loyal readers, I am back in full force with yet another exhilarating subject. - The degrees of compliment I give my own work is beyond you, right? Well somebody's got to do it! - Before I get into the subject of the day, I wanted to share with you yet another series of pictures I took in the last few days... Have fun!

Erwin Blumenfeld, Sur la Tour Eiffel, 1938
A little about Blumenfeld...

Erwin Blumenfeld (1897 – 1969) was a famous American photographer of German origin.

In the 1930s, he published collages mocking Adolf Hitler. - Definitely worth checking out

In 1936, he emigrated to Paris. With the German occupation, he was interned in a concentration camp in 1940 because he was Jewish.

In 1941, he could escape to the USA.

In the 1940s and 1950s he became famous for his fashion photography, working for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, and also for artistic nude photography.

In the 1960s, he worked on his autobiography which found no publisher because it was considered to be too ironic towards society, and was published only after his death.

On my way back from school. Life is good

There's something about that song that is so uplifting and kinky at the same time, - very French, I guess - but I love it! Especially because of today's subject. So let me put you in the mix... A couple days ago, I was completely taking over by a feeling of sadness, anguish and dullness towards myself and others. - Needless to say that I haven't felt like that since I got here, 6 months ago - I'm usually a happy-go-lucky type of person, but that day, I couldn't understand my empire state of mind. Finally, overwhelmed with my emotions, I decide to BBM text - Yes, you heard right! BBM a.k.a. BlackBerry Messenger - my very good friend - Sister from another mother - Sakoura. We finally decide to Ichat it! - The unkind use of a verb for a noun... Speechless are you? Get over it. - What a mistake that was friends... - I know you'll read this: Thank you and I love you - She was - if possible - in a WORST emotional state! Realizing that we are no way near helping each other but only digging the whole deeper, I decide to sleep on it. As John Steinbeck once said, "It is a common experience that a problem difficult at night is resolved in the morning after the committee of sleep has worked on it." So that is precisely what I did!

The next day, as I woke up, the only thing going through my mind is: "I never want to feel like I did yesterday." That's when I decide to cheer myself up! Immediately I thought of TED -No, he's not my lover or nothing to do with a person from the opposite sex - In fact, TED is a small nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. - Are you thinking what I'm thinking? G-e-n-i-u-s! Lightbulb again... - Browsing and digging into the archives I land on this amazing video/conference of Neil Pasricha revealing the insightful and beautiful Story of Awesome. You NEED to watch this... When I was done watching this awesome video, everything was perfect again. - Okay, so mayyyy-be I'm giving this video wayyy to much credit, but you still have to check it out! It's worth it...

For those of you who didn't obey to my orders watch the video, here's Neil Pasricha's closing thought. Maybe that will persuade you to watch it.

In his own words:

"[In life, things] ain’t gonna go according to plan! [Still,] there are just so many things to be happy about! Architecture, agriculture, jewelry, democracy… We only have 100 years to enjoy it; that’s the sad part about it! Life is so great that we only get such a short time to experience and enjoy all those tinny little moments that make it so sweet. And that moment is right now and those moments are counting down and those moments are always, always, always fleeing. You will never be as young as you are right now and that’s why I believe if you live your life with a great attitude, choosing to move forward and move on whenever life deals you a blow, living with a sense of awareness of the world around you, embracing your inner 3 year old and seeing the tinny joys that make life so sweet, being authentic to yourself, being you and being cool with that, letting your heart lead you and putting yourself in experiences that satisfies you, then I think you’ll live a life that is rich and that is satisfying and I think you’ll live a life that is truly awesome."

After such an inspiring message, you owe it to yourself to at least check his website - Awarded the best blog in the world! - As he has so wisely put it into words, we should all start putting it into action and remind ourselves of those simple universal little pleasures that we all love and we just don’t talk about enough. On your sad days like your good, the whole concept of 1000 Awesome things that Pasricha suggests throughout his blog/website is somehow cheerful, funny and beautifully executed. This is most probably my favorite these days - I've been squatting second-hand libraries/book stores for the last few days... I bought like ten books this week only, go figure!

I second that: It's AWESOME!

Finally, always remember the 3A's of the Book of Awesome: Attitude, Awareness and Authenticity! So go on; Move on and move forward, stay eternally in touch with the 3 year old in you and most of all, be you and be cool with that. The truth is: There's only one of you... It would be a waste to deprive the world from your greatness! - We are all great if we believe in ourselves and in our capacities

Last but not least, ask yourself this: How can I make/turn everyday into an awesome one? - Don't look at me! The answer is within you... Oh! Look at that, we are all out of time! I'll see you next week... -

Until next time, , amor n' pAris...

Going completely Gaga for Ankara ♥

Salaam dear readers - I'm not trying to be polite, I mean it! - Before I go on about yet another thrilling subject - Did she just characterize her own work as thrilling? Oh stop it; You know it's true! - I have to share the following pictures... Let's just say they were taking in a very eccentric party or very peculiar to say the least. To start, I have one name and two words for you: L a d y  G a g a !

I scream, you scream, they all scream for...
That being said - or painted in this case -, here are some other shots I took of very random but yet cool things. I'm just getting started with this whole photography thing, so be gentile with your criticism.

Might of been something I was on...

 Always Coca-Cola

Marlboro Country, Marlboro Man...
Now that I'm really done displaying bits and bites of my so-called talent - NOT - for capturing all moments, or no moment at all, let's talk business... THE subject of the day! You know how in my first post, I mentioned very quickly in a i.e. format the fact that I'll be visiting the home of the very famous Selimiye Mosque. For those who have 1. Not read my first post - Are you serious? Read it and come back - or 2. Read my post - thank you very much - and still have no idea what, who or where I'm talking about; Turkey's what you are looking for. Hungry, are you? No, not the animal! Noticed the capital T at the beginning? Ah! That's more like it: the country! To be precise - and official -, it's the beautiful Republic of Turkey. Okay, for all you Armenians out there, don't get mad when you read this - No hateful or mean comments please -, I'm sure your country's as amazing!

So now that you get the uncommon use of such salutation for my part - Salaam! ; The girl has to adapt! - you might still be wondering - what the heck - I'm going to be doing there. Well friends, I will be conquering the world, making it a better one to live in for all generations to come, for you, your kids and their kids... Come on, who's with me; Let's start a revolution?! - Okay, not exactly the initial program of the trip, but a girl can aspire to making a difference, can't she? - Now that I'm back to reality - ♫ Oh there goes gravity. Oh, there goes Rabbit, he choked. He's so mad, but he won't give up that. - what's the true motive for my voyage?

A few months back, Timea, the same friend that initiated the start-up of this blog, had posted something on her Facebook wall - Back when I had an account - about some student conferences taking place all around Europe for 1 week at a time and organized by Estiem under the name of Europe3D Events. Being that I'm mainly in Paris to travel, - and study; Ya, right! - I immediately checked myself as "attending" without asking too many questions. As the weeks flew by - because the literally do up here - I started consulting their website more and more frequently in the hopes of finding an upcoming event. Then, one beautiful day of january, after my pleasant overwhelming-non-stop-partying holidays in Montreal, I find out that there is a 3D Event open for applications! - Okay! So I might have magnified and prettified the whole story, but that's how I like to tell it! It's so magical that way... - So I was saying? Oh! Yes, my application. I sent one in and then forgot about it... Until January 18th 2011 at 23:15 p.m. - I'll spear you the seconds... -  when my Blackberry vibrated. - I know what you are thinking, don't get to excited, it was on the table - I had just received an e-mail from a person in charge at Estiem regarding my application. He was basically was saying that I had been selected to be part of this amazing (I added that) experience. - All I could hear myself screaming saying was  : Oh-My-God, Oh-My-God, Oh-My-God! The next day, - Yes, already! I'm very impulsive spontaneous... - I booked my flight.

In the same vein, another great country I'll be seeing very shortly - one week before Turkey - is Morocco! Half of you reading know why and the other doesn't. So why Morocco? Well first, I have always wanted to go there, wether it's because of all the moroccan friends I've made and kept in my surroundings throughout the years or simply a genuine appreciation for the country and its heart-warming people, distinct traditions, colorful souq, breathtaking landscapes, dunes and desert; I couldn't say which one of them it is, for I have only seen Morocco in pictures and through well told anecdotes and stories. It might just be a melting pot of both. One thing's for sure, the desire to explore such a magnificent country has been growing inside me for no less than a decade now. And so, I've finally been giving the opportunity - a week long break from school in Paris - to go and uncover those Moroccan treasures, that I've heard so highly of, with my own eyes and through my own touch. Stay tuned for my Turkish & Moroccan adventures through a lens... Pictures to come end of February.

Meanwhile, here's a sneak peek... and a little bit of history! Let the pictures and their stories take you on a discovery ride... (You gotta' love Wikipedia!)

Aya Sophia - The Church of the Holy Wisdom

Hagia Sophia - from the Greek: Ἁγία Σοφία, "Holy Wisdom"; Latin: Sancta Sophia or Sancta Sapientia; Turkish: Aya Sofya - is a former Orthodox patriarchal basilica, later a mosque, and now a museum in Istanbul, Turkey.

In 1453, Constantinople was conquered by the Ottoman Turks under Sultan Mehmed II, who subsequently ordered the building converted into a mosque. The bells, altar, iconostasis, and sacrificial vessels were removed and many of the mosaics were plastered over. Islamic features — such as the mihrab, minbar, and four minarets — were added while in the possession of the Ottomans. It remained a mosque until 1935, when it was converted into a museum by the Republic of Turkey.

For almost 500 years the principal mosque of Istanbul, Hagia Sophia served as a model for many other Ottoman mosques, such as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque - a.k.a. The Blue Mosque of Istanbul - , the Şehzade Mosque, the Süleymaniye Mosque - The one I told you about! - , the Rüstem Pasha Mosque and the Kılıç Ali Paşa Mosque.

Souq in Marrakech - Spices
A souq - Arabic: سوق, also souk, esouk, suk, sooq, souq, or suq; technical transliteration sūq - is a commercial quarter in an Arab or Berber city.

Though each neighbourhood within the city would have a local Souq selling food and other essentials, the main souq was one of the central structures of a large city. A central marketplace, it was where textiles, jewellery, spices, wooden sculptures and other valuable goods as well as the money changers were arranged in a line.
A quadrilateral of stone-vaulted streets parallel to or crossing each other or a tight mass of buildings too packed together for roads to intersect them. The workshops were further away from this centre of exchange as were the main residential quarters – though the wealthier merchants or scholars might live within the centre of the city.

In a souq, the final price of an item is reached by bargaining with the shopkeeper. Traders of a given commodity would all sell in the same souq, thus ensuring a competitive market. In some African countries the souq was a place where people could come and talk, or sit down to tell stories.

Heat, Camels and the Desert...

The Western Sahara is a disputed territory in North Africa, bordered by Morocco to the north, Algeria to the northeast, Mauritania to the east and south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Its surface area amounts to 266,000 square kilometers. It is one of the most sparsely populated territories in the world, mainly consisting of desert flatlands. The population of the territory is estimated at just over 500,000, over half of whom live in El Aaiun, the largest city in Western Sahara (also called Laayoune)...

Driiinnnn-nnnngggg! Saved by the bell... And oh! One last thing before you go... Morocco, Estiem, Europe3D, Ankara and Istanbul: HERE I COME !

Prosciutto, baguette and olive oil: The languages of food

Greetings from the city of   Before I reveal today's topic, I thought I'd share with you the savory diner that I prepared with my charming German friend, Carina. Enjoy...

The story goes a little something like this...

It started with a touch of greens...

Some breadcrumbs, to-mâ-tos, cheese and Italian bacon...

And then... Wait for it, wait for it, wait for it!!!

Le-gend-ary - Pasta a la Carbonada with a Twist
Still fuming... Smelling delicious!

Now I worked up your appetite. Gr-ea-ttt! (Sarcasm? Barely!) Okay, okay, go get yourself something to nibble on at least until you're done reading this. I'll wait... Stiilllll waiting! Here's a few healthy ideas: Chips, M & M's, Bassé Nuts. Anymore suggestions needed? Oh shoot! Did I say healthy, I meant to write UNhealthy. I'm so clumsy with this whole writing thing... Now that your cravings are taken care of and that you're comfortable in your sitting arrangements, can we go back to my subject of the day? Thank you!

Ah! All this junk food talking got me craving chocolate... - No, I can't, I can't, I really can't - Okay, so I was saying? FOCUS! Agggh! Right, subject of the day: Languages. What's the tie between foods and languages you're asking yourself. Simple I say! Foods are direct links to the countries, the cultures and the languages they come from.

Desperately trying to falling asleep yesterday - I'm not even trying to be melodramatic here, 18 nights and counting without a decent night of sleep - I was still cogitating about the spur-of-the-moment-impulsive creation of my blog. Then, I came to realizing that the first sentence of my first entry had the name of the city I'm currently in completely deformed from it's original size and format. To be precise, Paris became Par-reee. - Okay, so it was some kind of excitement - I still couldn't stop thinking about the paradox that was hiding behind it: Trying to make the frenchest city in the world, english. Something was definitely wrong about that!

Everything became even clearer as I was promoting my master piece - in the making - Paris did not earn the "frenchest city" status for nothing. And so, all Parisians and that's an understatement -  regardless of there status, occupation or background make deforming the english language there personal most important mission of the day. I found myself going from talking about my new baby with soooo much enthusiasm to realizing that they wouldn't get any of it. Ha! One even went on to complementing my templates. Really?! Templates, huh? That's when I thought to myself: I already talk the franglophone language as I like to call it. - Definition: Mixture of both the French & English languages simultaneously... LITERALLY - why not use that ability to everyone's advantage?

Basically, the idea would be for me to write sporadically both english and french posts, - that's how far I'll go though, don't be to demanding! - all depending on the inspiration(s) of the day. That way, all my family, friends and followers, from near or far, will be able to read and enjoy my stories, anecdotes and thoughts. What do you think about that? Do we have ourselves a deal peeps?! - Bah! It's not as if you really have a choice; This isn't a democracy: I'm the QUEEN, remember?!

Another thing about languages, or maybe not: Typography. For an assignment in one of my most captivating classes - N O T - Oh, was that too big? Just making sure the message was clear! - we had to present all forms of printing - since the beginning of time!!! - One of them, was in fact Typography. Surfing the waves - Euh! - web, I came across these next videos:

Still obsessing about the right word?

Oh Nana! What number(s) would you press?

After all this debate/talk - Who am I kidding? There's no debate, it's Me, Myself and I in front of an unresponsive, non-contridicting screen - about healthy junk food, words, numbers and letters, only one question remains unanswered in my mind at 1:29 am, local Paris time... M & M's or Apple? - I thought I told you ♫ I'm a star. You see the ice? You see the cars? Flashy lights; everywhere we are livin' like, like theres no tomorrow : Love food with a capital L... Don't judge me. - Maybe I'm more of a Big Fruit after all; The crowns are simply not suitable for me - or my appetite - !

Now that's my kind of Apple

Think different. Bis zum nächstes mal,  Frieden, Liebe & Paris...

Blogspot, Oxfam and Vintage fashion: A match made in Paris!

Sitting in my delightful 35 square meters apartment in beautiful Par-reee, my roomy and a friend from the first floor walk in. My roomy has a bowl of soup in her hands and she's followed by Timea, the legendary cook. I can only think of one 7 letter word at that moment. Let me spell it out for you: J-E-A-L-O-U-S

As soon as I see her, we start talking about all sorts of things. i.e. Europe3D Event in Turkey, my new found interest in photography and my all time Love -with a capital  L- for food. As we babble about everything and anything, she brings up a certain cooking/photography blog... Interesting! I immediately want to see what that's all about ; Dah! As I'm going through her posts and pictures, I'm thinking this is such a great blog! - Right here: http://coffeeandcroissant.blogspot.com/ - And that's precisely when the magic happens or should I say the light bulb started flashing over my head. - Don't lie; You just had the mental image, right?! -

And so, I think to myself: J A C K P O T ! After all this time, contemplating the idea, thinking about what I'd say, saying I could/couldn't do it, promising I would/wouldn't do it, here I am, writing my own blog. Okay, so maybe there are like a trillion or a quadrillion - Is that even a word?! - other ones on the web. And you might be thinking: What makes mine the coolest, funest (sic) and most special one of them all? Let's keep the suspense lasting for now. All I can say is that you'll find out as you read on... Throughout the weeks and months to come.  - I haven't quite figured that out just yet - Ah! C'mon! Give the girl a break, the illumination just happened! But whatever it is, you'll be the first to know, that's a promise; pinky swear!

Now that the whole Spotblog - Wait that doesn't sound right... Oh! I mean Blogspot situation is taken care of, you might be thinking: What is the connection with an "international confederation of 14 organisations working with over 3,000 partners in around 100 countries to find lasting solutions to poverty and injustice" a.k.a Oxfam? Well, as I was thinking of the picture/image I wanted to have on my first page, not haven any personal ones that I thought worthy of the front page of my new found hobbyhorse, I decided to call on our dear friend Google and Googled - Ha! It's a verb ladies and gents! I did the impossible: conjugated a noun! Get over it. - the following sequence of words: "Beautiful pictures". How uncreative you want to scream through your screen? Yes, I thought so too. Then, being a complete publicity/ad lover, something else came to mind: Ads of the World.

Scouting through the new, the old and the upcoming ad campaigns, - of-the-world - one ad in particular caught my eye. In a groovy, retro'ish, old 70's typography was written the following: "The lead singer couldn't take his eyes off me." And that was it, Oxfam had me at "lead singer". A few clicks later and the rest was history...

On the UK Oxfam site I found everything I was looking for in a "global movement of people working with others to overcome poverty and suffering" to use there words. Most of all, a perfectly executed Vintage Fashion shopping section chronologically presented and well documented: styles from the 50's, 60's, 70's up until the 80's. Two words: Old-school, classy, equitable and dashing! Was that more than two? Indeed, that makes four. Okay, so I got a little carried away, who doesn't?

After the beautiful and extensive essay I just made about the first ad, why choose another one of the Oxfam UK campaign as my front image you ask? It's pretty plain and simple. Today, as I was sending out resumes for different internships I was interested in undertaking come Spring, I found myself using the expression "The Big Apple". It just felt right!

Then, as I was dissecting Oxfam's series of current ads, I was faced with another dilemma: Big Fruit, Groupie or Monarch; What best describes me? Okay, okay... Settle down peeps; the crown it is! ★

TO BE CONTINUED... Until then, Peace Paris ...
